Camry is Japanese for a crown. Toyota named the car kanmuri, crown, in a series that already included the Corona and the Corolla, both Latin words for the same thing. The model reached the United States in 1983 and the name entered the American birth data shortly afterwards, which is how a girl comes to be named after a headpiece by way of a saloon car.

Where it comes from

The story of Camri

Car names enter the American name stock regularly and the mechanism is straightforward: a word encountered daily, positively associated, unattached to any existing person. Mercedes is the oldest and largest example, being a Spanish name that became a car and then a name again. Lexus, Chevy, Porsche, Bentley, Dakota, Aspen and Camry have all appeared in the birth data. What makes Camry unusual is that its own origin is a translation chain: Toyota's flagship was the Crown, then came the Corona, Latin for crown, then the Corolla, Latin for a small crown, and then the Camry, an anglicized spelling of the Japanese word for one. Four cars, four languages, one object. The company has never disguised the pattern.

Japanese kanmuri, a crown

Camri is a respelling of Camry, which Toyota derived from the Japanese kanmuri, a crown, continuing a naming series that included the Crown, the Corona and the Corolla, all crown words. It may alternatively be read as a variant of Camryn or Camrie, American formations on the Cam stem. Which applies to a given bearer is not recoverable. It peaks in 1995.

Camri sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Camri went to 12 girls in 2025, but Kamry, Kamri and Camry are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 79, which makes it the 881st most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,481 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 20,345 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 133,939 for Camri itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
