Where it comes from

The story of Anel

The reversal name is a genuine American invention and it can be dated: the heaven-backwards spelling was almost unrecorded before the late 1990s and then became one of the fastest-rising names ever registered. Once the trick is available it applies to anything, and short names reverse most cleanly. Whether Anel arrived that way or came from Spanish directly cannot be told from the records, and both are plausible in the states where it is given. The Portuguese word is a nice coincidence in either case: anel is a ring, from the Latin diminutive of anulus, which is also the source of the English annular and of the annulus in geometry.

ring, in Portuguese

Anel is the ordinary Portuguese and Galician word for a ring, from Latin anellus, a little ring. As a Spanish-language given name it is also read as a short form of Ana or Angela, and as a reversal of Lena. None of these has been shown to be the source of the American entries.

Anel sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 76 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Anel went to 7 girls in 2025, but Annel is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 12, which makes it the 948th most-given girls’ name of the year — 10,984 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 133,939 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 229,610 for Anel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Darlyn test

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Anel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Darlyn climbed just as high around 1946, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Darlyn's path sketches the road Anel is walking now.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Four letters and two syllables, easy in Spanish, Portuguese and English.
  • It serves either child, and the records show both.
  • It is short without being a shortening of anything settled.
What to consider
  • The stress differs between English and Spanish speakers, so it will be said two ways.
  • It is close enough to Ana, Anelle and Janel to be misheard as any of them.
  • The few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
