Our story of Darlyn
Ours, offered as ours. Marlene was made by a German actress in the 1920s from Maria and Magdalene, and its ending came loose immediately — Darlene, Charlene, Arlene, Raelene, Sharlene all follow within twenty years. That one woman's decision about her own stage name generated a whole family of American names is a genuinely traceable piece of naming history, and Darlyn is at the far end of it with an -lyn substituted.
Meaningscholars disagree
little dear one
Darlene is generally built on the English darling, from Old English deorling, with the -ene ending taken from Marlene. Darlyn substitutes -lyn. Neither compound is inherited and the darling at the bottom is genuine.

About 1 girl in 22,323 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 50,227 for Darlyn itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Rosaleen test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Darlyn's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Rosaleen climbed just as high around 1927, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Rosaleen's path sketches the road Darlyn is walking now.
Darlyn sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
