Our story of Arissa
Ours, offered as ours. The -issa ending has an unusually literary history: Clarissa appears as a Latinate form in the seventeenth century and Richardson's enormous 1748 novel made it famous, after which the ending was available. Marissa, Larissa, Alissa and Arissa followed over the next two centuries. Larissa is separately a real Greek place name, which complicates the family. Arissa is at the end of the line with no documented parent.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No source is established. Clarissa, from Latin clarus, bright, was used by Samuel Richardson in 1748 and its ending came loose. Marissa and Alissa are similar constructions. None is documented as the source of Arissa.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Gaynelle test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Arissa's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gaynelle climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gaynelle's path sketches the road Arissa is walking now.
