Darlynn
Feminine · “little dear one”
Darling is an Old English word. Deorling joins deore, dear, to a diminutive ending, and it has meant the same thing for a thousand years — which makes it one of the few affectionate words in the language that has not drifted at all. Darlene is usually traced to it, and Darlynn swaps the -lene ending for the -lynn that came along a generation later.

The story of Darlynn
Darlene appeared in American records in the 1910s and became very widely given by the 1940s, one of the -lene cohort along with Charlene, Marlene and Arlene. The -lynn ending arrived slightly later and began replacing -lene on the same front elements, which is how Darlynn came about — the same name with the ending of the next decade. It appears from 1937 and peaked in 1946, which puts it right at the crossover between the two fashions.

little dear one
The usual derivation takes Darlene from the English darling, from the Old English deorling — dear with a diminutive ending. That reading is plausible and not demonstrated; the name may equally have been built from the Dar- sound and the -lene ending that was making names by the dozen in the 1920s. The -lynn in this version comes from Lynn, a Welsh word for a lake, and carries nothing.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
