Kamel
Masculine · “Arabic kamil”
Kamel and camel look like the same word and are not. Kamil is Arabic for perfect or complete, from the root k-m-l. The animal is jamal in Arabic and gamal in Hebrew, and it reached English through Greek kamelos, so the English word really is Semitic, just from a different root and a different consonant.

The story of Kamel
The camel is one of the oldest attested loanwords in European languages. Greek took kamelos from a Semitic source before classical times, Latin took camelus from Greek, and every European language took it from Latin, which is why the word is nearly identical from Portuguese to Russian. That makes it genuinely Semitic in origin, and the resemblance to the Arabic name is close enough that the two are constantly confused. Arabic distinguishes them clearly: jamal, a camel, begins with jim; kamil, complete, begins with kaf. The confusion is entirely a product of romanisation, which flattens the two initial consonants toward each other for readers who cannot see the script. The Turkish form Kemal is the same word as Kamel and was carried by the founder of the Turkish republic, which is why it is one of the most used names in Turkey.
Meaning
Arabic kamil, perfect or complete
From the Arabic root k-m-l, associated with completeness and perfection, giving kamil, complete or accomplished, and kamal, perfection. The name is used across the Arabic-speaking world and in Turkish as Kemal. The English word camel is unrelated: it comes through Latin and Greek from a Semitic word, Hebrew gamal and Arabic jamal, which is a different root with a different first consonant. It peaks in 1979.

kah-MEL
Two syllables, stress on the second. KAM-el with the stress at the front is the English reading and makes it a homophone of the animal, which is why many families prefer the Kamal or Kamil spellings.

The Deveron test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kamel's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Deveron climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Deveron's path sketches the road Kamel is walking now.
Kamel sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
