Our reading is that the C to K shift in this family is a measurable event rather than a matter of taste, and it is one of the clearest in the American record. Caden appears first, in the early 1990s. Kaden follows, then Kayden, Kaiden, Kaeden and Kaedon, and by the middle of the 2000s the K forms collectively exceed the C form several times over. What drove it is straightforward. C in English is ambiguous, being soft before e and i and hard elsewhere, while K is hard in every position, so a name beginning with a vowel-uncertain C invites a moment's hesitation that K removes. Add to that the visual distinctiveness parents were after, and the K spellings had two advantages at once. The result is that the original spelling now looks like the unusual one.
