The story of Justino
Justin was born in Samaria to a Greek family, studied Stoic, Peripatetic, Pythagorean and Platonist philosophy in turn, and converted after meeting an old man by the sea who argued him out of Platonism. He continued to teach in a philosopher's cloak, opened a school in Rome, and wrote two Apologies addressed to the emperor and a Dialogue with Trypho, a Jew. His central move was to claim that the divine Logos had been partially present to everyone, so that Socrates and Heraclitus had lived according to reason and were in some sense Christians before Christ. That argument gave later Christian thought a way to keep Greek philosophy rather than reject it. He was tried with six others under the prefect Rusticus and beheaded, and the trial record survives.
