The story of Dani
Daniel is the exile at the Babylonian court who reads the writing on the wall and survives the lions, and his book is one of the few in the Hebrew Bible written partly in Aramaic. The name spread through Christian and Jewish Europe. Dani is the everyday form in Israel, Spain, Italy and Hungary, and is used for both sexes in several of them.

- counting every spelling
The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dani went to 25 boys in 2025, but Danny and Dany are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 506, which makes it the 507th most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,632 places above the chart.
About 1 boy in 3,376 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 68,323 for Dani itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Willey test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Willey climbed just as high around 1930, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Willey's path sketches the road Dani is walking now.
Dani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

- The stress differs between the English and Hebrew readings.
