Juliett
Feminine · “of the family of Julius”
Juliett with two t's is a very specific spelling, and it exists for a reason most people would not guess: it is the international radio alphabet's word for the letter J, spelled that way so a French speaker would not silence the final t.

The story of Juliett
Giulietta was an ordinary Italian diminutive before a play made it something else; the story is much older than the play and was circulating in Italian novellas for decades before it reached English. The doubled-t spelling has a quite separate origin: when the international radio alphabet was standardized, Juliet was respelled Juliett precisely so that French speakers, who would otherwise drop a final t, would sound it. Both spellings reach American records, and the second brings the alphabet with it.

of the family of Julius
Juliet is the English form of Italian Giulietta, a diminutive of Giulia, from the Roman gens name Julius — whose own derivation is not established, since Roman family names are frequently older than Latin. The family claimed descent from Iulus, the son of Aeneas, which is legend rather than etymology. So the ending is certain and the root is not.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names.
