Where it comes from

The story of Abbagail

A play of the early sixteen-hundreds gave its lady's maid the name Abigail, the character was memorable, and within a generation the word had become the ordinary English term for a waiting-woman — used in novels, in letters and in job advertisements for the better part of two centuries, entirely detached from anybody actually called that. A real and rather famous royal servant of the period happened to be called Abigail too, which helped the word stick. The name eventually recovered; the common noun faded out in the nineteenth century and now survives only in dictionaries. It is one of the clearest cases of a name becoming a word and then becoming a name again.

Meaning

My father is joy

The Hebrew name is a small sentence about a father's gladness. The doubled b and the extra a in this spelling are American additions and change nothing about the sense or the sound.

Fashion outlook

Abbagail sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is settled, warm and easy to explain.
  • It has two very different short forms, both of them established names.
  • The name is recognized across three religious traditions.
What to consider
  • Abigail is the standard spelling and hers will be corrected to it on every form.
  • The doubled letter reads as an error to people who know the name.
  • It is long, and the short form will do most of the work.
