The story of Juanmanuel
Juan Manuel of Villena, born in 1282, was the grandson of Ferdinand III and one of the most powerful nobles in Castile, spending decades in and out of rebellion against his cousins and nephews. He also took writing seriously enough to worry about copying errors and to deposit corrected manuscripts at a monastery, which is unusual for a layman of his period. El Conde Lucanor is his best-known work: a count asks his adviser Patronio for guidance, Patronio answers with a story, and each ends with a couplet. The stories come from Arabic, Latin and oral sources, and one of them, about a trickster who claims to weave cloth invisible to anyone of illegitimate birth, is the direct ancestor of the emperor's new clothes. It is a landmark in Spanish prose, written by a man whose day job was civil war.
Meaning
Hebrew Immanuel, God with us
