Jordin
Feminine · “Hebrew Yarden”
Jordin is given to both — 4,413 girls and 2,482 boys since 1880. See Jordin as a boy nameSee other names given to both
The Jordan is the descender. Hebrew yarad means to go down, and the river does exactly that: it starts above seven hundred feet at the foot of Mount Hermon and ends thirteen hundred feet below sea level in the Dead Sea, the lowest exposed land on the planet. The name is a topographic description and it is accurate.

The story of Jordin
The river's fall is extreme for its length. It runs about two hundred miles by a very winding course over a straight-line distance of around a hundred, and in that distance it drops from the Hula valley to the surface of the Dead Sea at more than four hundred meters below sea level. The rift it flows through is part of the Great Rift Valley system that runs from Syria to Mozambique. Its religious weight comes from the crossing into Canaan in Joshua and from the baptism of Jesus, and medieval European pilgrims brought its water home in flasks to baptize their children, which is how Jordan became a European given name in the twelfth century. It was male for eight hundred years and crossed to girls in the United States in the 1980s, and the female use is now substantial.
Meaning
Hebrew Yarden, the descender
From Hebrew yarad, to go down or descend, giving Yarden, the one that descends. The river runs from the slopes of Mount Hermon to the Dead Sea, dropping about two thousand feet over its course and ending well below sea level. The name became a personal name in Europe through crusaders who brought back Jordan water for baptisms. Jordin is a respelling; it peaks in 2007.

About 1 girl in 1,816 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Jordin itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Jeanna test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jordin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jeanna climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record.
