The story of Jordin
Crusaders returning from the Holy Land brought Jordan water home for baptisms and gave the name to their children, which is how a river became a European given name in the twelfth century. It was quiet for centuries and then rose enormously in America from the 1970s for boys and the 1980s for girls, helped by Michael Jordan's career from 1984. That climb produced spellings: Jordan, Jorden, Jordyn, Jordin and Jordon all appear, with the -yn and -in versions leaning feminine. Jordin's boys' peak in 2008 sits just after Jordin Sparks won American Idol in 2007, which pushed the spelling for both sexes.
