Where it comes from

The story of Kary

The man who did most with this spelling changed how biology is done. He worked out, driving through the California mountains one night in the nineteen-eighties, how to make a machine copy a chosen stretch of DNA over and over until there was enough of it to work with — a procedure so simple in principle that colleagues initially assumed somebody must have thought of it already. Nobody had. It made genetic fingerprinting, most modern diagnostics and a great deal of everything since possible, and it won him a share of a Nobel prize a decade later.

Kary sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1963, with 50 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Kary sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is the shortest spelling available for the sound.
  • It is completely unisex without straining for it.
  • Kay sits inside it as a short form that stands alone.
What to consider
  • Five other spellings compete and this one gets corrected to all of them.
  • It leans to girls, but a real share of children with this spelling are boys, so forms will sometimes guess wrong.
  • No meaning can be given, because the route into the name is unknown.
