The Normans brought Joscelin to England as a man's name, and it did what most Norman names did there: it became a surname and then went quiet as a first name for several hundred years. It came back in the twentieth century as a woman's name, which is the same journey Evelyn, Shirley and Beverly made in the same period. Once it was back, American families rewrote it in every available direction. The doubled n and the final e in this spelling are both borrowed from the -anne and -ynne endings that were fashionable at the same time, and neither of them changes the sound by so much as a syllable.

The strongest account traces Joscelin to a Germanic name meaning a member of the Gaut people — a tribal name used as a personal one, which was ordinary practice. A competing account connects it to the Latin iocosus, playful, and that reading is old and attractive and almost certainly wrong; it looks like an explanation invented later to fit the sound. The tribal reading is the one the forms support. Neither meaning transfers any particular sense to a child, since the name has been a name and not a description for a very long time.
