Where it comes from

The story of Jocelyne

New France was ceded to Britain in 1763 and the francophone population of about seventy thousand was left to develop its own conventions with very little contact with France for the next two centuries. Its French preserved features that metropolitan French lost and lost features that France kept, and its naming did the same. Devotional naming remained stronger and lasted longer in Quebec, so Marie and Joseph were prefixed to enormous numbers of names well into the twentieth century. The mid-century fashions differ visibly from France's. Then the Quiet Revolution of the 1960s changed the pattern sharply, and Quebec's naming since has been more American in shape than French. Jocelyne belongs to the mid-century layer, and in the American data it arrives mostly by a different route again, through Spanish-speaking families using the French spelling.

Meaning

Germanic Gaut, a member of the Gaut people

From the Germanic tribal name Gaut, with a diminutive, giving Gautzelin and then Old French Josselin. The name was male for centuries and became female in the twentieth. Jocelyne is the French feminine spelling, used in France, Belgium and Quebec. It peaks in the American data in 1996, chiefly among Spanish-speaking families.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jocelyne went to 11 girls in 2025, but Joseline, Jocelynne and Joselyne are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 53, which makes it the 907th most-given girls’ name of the year — 7,953 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 30,326 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 146,115 for Jocelyne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

  • The French spelling is elegant on the page.
What to consider
  • Three languages pronounce it three different ways.
