Ioanna
Feminine · “God is gracious”
Ioanna is the Greek original that every Joan, Jane, Joanna and Juana in the world descends from. Greek has no J — that letter is a medieval European invention, made by putting a tail on an I — so the initial here is the older one. Its American peak is 1978, following Greek migration rather than any English-language fashion.

The story of Ioanna
The letter J did not exist as a separate character until the sixteenth century; before that, I served for both the vowel and the consonant, and scribes lengthened it in some positions for clarity. That means every J-name in Europe was written with an I for most of its history, and Greek, which never adopted the J, has kept the older spelling. Ioanna has been an ordinary Greek women's name for two thousand years, borne by Byzantine empresses and by generations of ordinary families. American records show it with Greek migration through the twentieth century, peaking in 1978.
Meaning
God is gracious
Hebrew Yohanan, 'Yahweh is gracious', was rendered in Greek as Ioannes, and its feminine Ioanna appears in the Gospel of Luke as one of the women who supported Jesus and who found the empty tomb. Latin took Iohannes and Iohanna, and the J is a later scribal development of the same letter. So every European form of this name — John, Jean, Juan, Ivan, Sean, Giovanni, Jane, Joanna — descends from the Greek written here.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
