Where it comes from

The story of Jewel

For about forty years around the turn of the twentieth century, American parents used precious-substance words freely and without regard to sex. Pearl, Ruby, Opal, Jewel, Gem, Garnet and Beryl all appear in the records for boys as well as girls in the 1890s and 1900s, alongside Golden and Silver. It is part of a wider pattern in which any pleasant English noun was a candidate: Forrest, Clay, Ivy, Fern, Vernon and Orville belong to the same moment. The pattern collapsed after the First World War, and by 1930 every one of the gemstone words had become female or fallen out of use. Jewel is one of the last to hold on for boys. Its curve peaks in 1907 and it is essentially gone from the male data by 1940, which makes it a precise marker of a naming era rather than of a family.

English jewel, from Latin jocus, a jest

The usual derivation runs from Old French joel or jouel through to Latin jocus, a joke or game, by way of a sense of plaything and then ornament. An alternative traces it to Latin gaudium, joy, and the two have been argued over for a century. Either way the modern sense of a precious stone is late. As a personal name Jewel was used for both sexes in the United States and peaks for boys in 1907.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jewel went to 9 boys in 2025, but Jewell is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 14, which makes it the 914th most-given boys’ name of the year — 7,329 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 122,005 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 189,786 for Jewel itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
