Jewell belongs to a moment when American parents were naming children after precious things — Pearl, Ruby, Opal, Beryl, Garnet. Most of that crop is quiet now. Jewell is the general case among them, the word for the whole category rather than one stone, and it carries a doubled l because it came to America as a surname before it came as a name.

How old is the name Jewell?

Where it comes from

The story of Jewell

Jewell was an English and Welsh surname long before it was a first name, taken from the Breton personal name Judicael carried into England after the Conquest, and the doubled l belongs to that surname line rather than to the word for a gem. In America the two collapsed together. Around the turn of the twentieth century families across the South and the lower Midwest were reaching for the language of value — precious stones, precious metals, precious things — and Jewell answered on both counts: it looked like the surname and read like the word. It was given to daughters and to a real minority of sons, and it has been carried by both ever since.

Meaning

a precious stone or ornament

The English word jewel comes through Old French joel, and behind that, unexpectedly, is the Latin jocus — a joke, a game, a plaything. The route runs from amusement to ornament to treasure, which is the sort of drift ordinary words make over a thousand years and nobody notices.

Pronouncing Jewell

JOOL

One syllable in ordinary American speech, the same as the word. Some speakers give it two — JOO-uhl — and both are heard, particularly in the South where the name is most at home. The doubled l changes nothing about the sound.

Jewell sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1923, with 139 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jewell went to 5 boys in 2025, but Jewel is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 14, which makes it the 914th most-given boys’ name of the year — 11,094 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 122,005 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 341,615 for Jewell itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The word behind it is plain English, so the name is never misheard even when it is misspelled.
  • It works for boys and girls, and the records show it has always done both.
  • It is a genuine surname as well as a word, which gives it a formality that word-names often lack.
  • One syllable, easy to say, and it sits well with almost any surname.
What to consider
  • Most people write Jewel with one l, because that is the word; the second l will be corrected away constantly.
  • It is strongly associated with an older American generation, and a child may be the only one of their age carrying it.
  • Most children given this spelling are girls, though a real minority are boys — enough that forms should not be trusted to guess, and a boy named Jewell will meet the assumption often.
