The -rick in Jerrick is a dead word still doing work. Germanic ric meant a ruler, cognate with Latin rex and Sanskrit raja, and it ends Eric, Frederick, Roderick, Ulrich and Kendrick. Nobody choosing a modern name knows it means king, and the element goes on being productive anyway.

Where it comes from

Our story of Jerrick

Our reading is that -rick is a good example of an element outliving every speaker who understood it. The word ric was live vocabulary in the Germanic languages: it meant ruler and it also meant realm, which is why German still has Reich. It appears in hundreds of early names, and the people using them knew what it said. By the time the names reached English through Norman French, the word was gone from the language, and the element became a sound. What is remarkable is that it stayed productive. American parents in the twentieth century built Derrick, Kendrick, Jerrick and Terrick out of it, treating it as an available ending in exactly the way -lyn and -iyah are available, and none of that required anyone to know it once meant king. A morpheme can die and its shape can go on working, which is the ordinary fate of borrowed name elements.

Not established

Jerrick is an American formation, most likely a blend of the Jer- stem, from Jerry or Jerome, with the -rick ending drawn from Derrick, Kendrick and Frederick. That ending descends from Germanic ric, a ruler, cognate with Latin rex, Gaulish rix and Sanskrit rajan. The compound is not attested outside American use and does not inherit the meaning of its parts. It peaks in 1989.

Jerrick sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1989, with 73 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jerrick went to 9 boys in 2025, but Jerick is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 24, which makes it the 904th most-given boys’ name of the year — 7,339 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 71,170 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 189,786 for Jerrick itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Rick is a complete and familiar short form.
  • The sound is entirely familiar from Derrick and Kendrick.
  • The ending has a genuine Germanic history even if the name does not.
What to consider
  • Derrick and Kendrick are both far more common.
  • The doubled r is not predictable from the sound.
  • The name as a whole has no meaning.
