Germanic name elements are drawn from a small stock and most of them are about war, kinship, animals or brightness. The spear is the most common weapon element because it was the most common weapon: the sword was expensive and the spear was what a free man owned, which is why Old English poetry calls warriors spear-bearers and why the Anglo-Saxon word for a nobleman's retinue is built around it. The element survives in English only in disguise. Garlic is gar-leac, spear-leek, named for the shape of its leaves. Gore, a triangular piece of land or cloth, is the same word. The names carried it further than the vocabulary did: Gerald, Gerard and Roger all reached English through Norman French, having gone into Frankish first, and by the time they arrived their bearers had no idea they were carrying a weapon.
