Adam lives 930 years, Seth 912, Enosh 905, Jared 962, Methuselah 969, and Enoch is the exception at 365, a number that matches the days of the year and is followed by the note that he walked with God and was not, for God took him. Mesopotamian king lists from the same region give the antediluvian rulers reigns of tens of thousands of years, so the biblical figures are conspicuously smaller than their neighbors, which some scholars read as a deliberate reduction. Others have found numerical patterns in the sequence, multiples of five and seven, suggesting a schematic rather than a historical intention. The names themselves are ordinary Hebrew words, and Jared's, descent, is one of the plainest.
