The story of Rand
Randolf came to England in two waves, once with Scandinavian settlement and once with the Normans, and it became the everyday medieval Randall — so common that it produced the surnames Randall, Rands and Rankin. The short form Rand as a given name is American and twentieth-century, part of a broader mid-century taste for one-syllable men's names that also produced Brett, Kent, Dean and Todd. The author Ayn Rand, who took the surname in 1926, gave the sound a second and quite separate visibility, and the name has occasionally been chosen for that association since.
