The story of Jeneva
Geneva sits where the Rhone leaves the lake, and its name is older than Roman records of it; Caesar mentions the town in his account of the Helvetii. The city's later fame came from Calvin and the Reformation, and then from international institutions, which is why it became an English girls' name in the nineteenth century alongside Florence and Verona. Genevieve, meanwhile, is the patron saint of Paris, a fifth-century figure whose Germanic name has nothing to do with Switzerland. Jeneva is a phonetic American respelling of the city name, and its best year in United States records is 1926.

of Geneva, from a pre-Roman place name
Geneva appears in Latin as Genava and is generally taken as Celtic or Ligurian, with proposed elements meaning a bend, a mouth or an estuary; none is settled. Genevieve descends from a Germanic name recorded as Genovefa, whose elements are also disputed but which is a different word entirely. The J spelling of this form is an American respelling and carries no meaning.

The Gilberta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jeneva's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gilberta climbed just as high around 1907, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gilberta's path sketches the road Jeneva is walking now.
Jeneva sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
