Our reading is that Jawan is best presented with both readings side by side, because the coincidence is a good one and the honest account is that they are unrelated. The American name belongs to the Ja- prefix family and follows a basketball player who spelled it Juwan and reached national attention in the early 1990s; the American curve responds to that, not to anything Persian. Meanwhile the Persian word is genuinely there and genuinely means what it means, and it descends from the same Indo-European adjective as Latin iuvenis, which gives English juvenile and junior, and as Old English geong, which gives young. Sanskrit yuvan is the same word again. So a family choosing this name in the United States is almost certainly not choosing a Persian word, and is nonetheless holding one.

Whether that is the source of the American name is doubtful: the 1997 peak sits with the Ja- prefix family and the -wan ending, alongside Juwan and Dajuan, which are coinages. The two should be treated separately, and the Persian word is offered as a genuine homonym rather than as an origin.
