Jantzen
Masculine · “Dutch”
Jantzen is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 706 boys against 14 girls since 1880.
Dutch families had no fixed surnames until Napoleon made them register in 1811. Before that a man was simply Jan's son, Jansen, and the name changed every generation. The decree froze whatever was current, which is why Dutch surnames are a snapshot of one year rather than a lineage.

The story of Jantzen
The Napoleonic decree of 1811 required every family in the annexed Netherlands to register a permanent surname. Most simply fixed the patronymic they were using, which is why Jansen, Janssen, Pietersen, Willemsen and Hendriks are so common and so undifferentiated. A well-known tradition holds that some families, expecting the French administration to be temporary, registered joke names, and Dutch surnames meaning naked born, from the cellar and similar do exist, though how many were deliberate jokes is disputed. What is not disputed is the effect on the record. Dutch genealogy before 1811 has to be done through patronymics that change every generation, and after 1811 through surnames that are shared by tens of thousands of unrelated families. Jantzen is one of those, frozen in a single administrative year.

The Dencil test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jantzen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dencil climbed just as high around 1947, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dencil's path sketches the road Jantzen is walking now.
