Janay reached #387 in 1987, and its ending is doing something specific. The -ay spelling represents a stressed final syllable, which English almost never has in names — Renee, Danae, Desiree and Janay all place the weight at the end, and all of them got that pattern from French. The spelling is an Americanization of an accent mark.

Where it comes from

Our story of Janay

English stresses the first syllable of almost everything, which is why final-stress names sound distinctly imported. French supplies the pattern — Renée, Aimée, Desirée — and American naming borrowed it in the 1960s and 1970s, first through those actual French names and then as a free-standing device. Once the pattern was available, the accent could go, because an American reader does not need é to know that -ay is stressed. Janay, Janae, Renay and Shanay all appear in the same decades, and the choice between -ay, -ae and -é is a choice about how French the name should look rather than how it should sound. Janay peaked in 1987, at the top of that whole family's run.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Ja- is a prefix syllable with no meaning. The -ay ending is a respelling of French -é or -ée, which is a past-participle ending rather than a word. Renée means reborn and Desirée means desired, and those meanings belong to those words; transferred to a constructed name the ending carries nothing. Janay has no established etymology.

juh-NAY

Two syllables with the stress firmly on the second and the first reduced to almost nothing. That final stress is the whole shape of the name; moving it to the front gives JAY-nay, which is a different name.

Janay sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 596 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Janay went to 15 girls in 2025, but Janai and Jaanai are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 61, which makes it the 899th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,234 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 26,349 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Janay itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The final-stress pattern gives it a distinctive rhythm most English names lack.
  • Jay works as an easy short form in any setting.
  • It is short, two syllables, with no consonant clusters.
What to consider
  • Janay, Janae, Jenae and Jannay are all in use.
  • It has no meaning, and the French ending it borrows does not supply one.
  • The 1987 peak dates it clearly.
