Yannai is a real name with a long Jewish history — a Hasmonean king carried it, and so did a fifth-century poet whose liturgical verse was lost for a thousand years and found in a Cairo storeroom in the twentieth century. Janai sits close to it and almost certainly does not descend from it; the American name belongs to the Ja- family that produced Janae, Janay and Jamai. Both facts are worth separating rather than blurring.
