Jamelia
Feminine · “Germanic amal”
Ophelia and Cordelia were both made by writers. Ophelia appears first in an Italian pastoral of 1504, Cordelia in Geoffrey of Monmouth's invented British history. Neither existed before a book put it there, and the -elia ending they share is now an ordinary American name element.

The story of Jamelia
The -elia names look like a family and are not. Amelia is Germanic, from amal, and reached English through Norman French. Cordelia is Geoffrey of Monmouth's Cordeilla, the youngest daughter in his invented history of Britain, from which Shakespeare took King Lear. Ophelia is first recorded in Jacopo Sannazaro's Arcadia of 1504, probably built on Greek ophelos, help, and Shakespeare took it from there. Delia is a title of Artemis, born on Delos. Aurelia is Latin gold. Five entirely separate origins converging on one ending, and the ending is now productive on its own: American parents build Janelia, Kamelia and Jamelia from it without any of the five sources being involved. That is the normal fate of a name ending that appears often enough to be noticed.

Germanic amal, work or vigor
Jamelia is most likely an American formation joining the Ja- prefix to Amelia, from Germanic amal, work or effort. It may equally be a respelling of Arabic Jamila, beautiful. The two are unrelated and the record does not distinguish them. The peak is 1987.
