Jamari
Feminine
Jamari is given to both — 894 girls and 15,240 boys since 1880. See Jamari as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Most American coinage endings sort by sex. The -a and -ah endings read as female, the -en and -on as male, and everyone knows it without being told. The -ari ending is one of the very few that does not sort at all, which is why Jamari has a substantial row on both sides.

Our story of Jamari
It is worth asking why some endings sort by sex and others do not. The ones that sort are almost always borrowed from a language that had grammatical gender: the -a of Latin, the -elle of French, the -ina of Italian. English inherited the signal along with the ending, and it still works. The endings that do not sort are the ones English made itself, out of nothing: -ari, -on, -lin and -ay have no grammatical history, so nothing tells a reader which side they belong to, and the answer is settled by whoever uses them first and most. Jamari is currently used more for boys than girls in the United States, and the female side reached its best year in 2007. Nothing in the word decides it.

No inherited etymology. The Ja- prefix and the -mari ending are both free elements in American naming. Some sources connect the ending to Arabic amir, a prince or commander, or to the Italian and Spanish mare, the sea; neither is the source, and both are retrofits applied to the finished spelling.

The Amberley test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jamari's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Amberley climbed just as high around 1987, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Amberley's path sketches the road Jamari is walking now.
Jamari sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
