Where it comes from

Our story of Jalyssa

Rabies was one of the terrors of the ancient world, and Greek had a word for the madness it produced, lyssa, personified as a goddess of frenzy in tragedy. A plant thought to counter it was named for what it lacked: alysson, the without-madness herb. The genus Alyssum still carries the name, and the flower is a garden staple that nobody associates with dogs. Alyssa became an extremely popular American girls' name in the 1980s and 1990s, and the prefix system then did its work, producing Jalyssa, Kalyssa and Dalyssa. Jalyssa's best year in United States records is 2007. The chain from a rabies remedy to a modern coinage is unbroken and completely invisible.

Meaningscholars disagree

without madness, from a plant name

Greek alysson, the plant, is generally analyzed as a-, without, plus lyssa, rage or madness, specifically the frenzy of rabies. The plant was used against bites. Alyssa as a name may descend from that or may be a variant of Alicia, from Germanic adal, noble. The Ja- prefix here is a free American element and carries no meaning.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Jalyssa went to 17 girls in 2025, but Jalissa is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 38, which makes it the 922nd most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,624 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 42,297 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Jalyssa itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
