The story of Jahi
Swahili is a Bantu language with a very large Arabic loan vocabulary, the product of a thousand years of Indian Ocean trade along the East African coast. Estimates of the Arabic share of the lexicon run from a fifth to a third, concentrated in commerce, law, religion and abstraction, while the grammar and core vocabulary remain entirely Bantu. The name of the language and the people is itself Arabic: sawahil, coasts. The language was written in Arabic script for centuries before colonial administrations imposed the Roman alphabet, and it became the lingua franca of a vast region, now with official status in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and with more second-language speakers than first. A name of Arabic origin used by Swahili speakers is therefore entirely ordinary rather than an anomaly.

Arabic jah, dignity or high rank
Jahi is listed as a Swahili name meaning dignity, honor or high rank, from Arabic jah, standing or prestige, one of the very many Arabic words in Swahili. The gloss is plausible and better supported than most in American name books, though the name's use in East Africa is not well documented. The American peak is 1977.

The Filemon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Jahi's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Filemon climbed just as high around 1928, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Filemon's path sketches the road Jahi is walking now.
Jahi sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
