Our reading is that the rhyme family, not the individual name, is the real unit of American naming, and the -aden group is the clearest demonstration there has ever been. Parents in that decade were not choosing between Aiden and Jayden as if they were different names; they were choosing a sound and then choosing a spelling and an initial to individuate it. Ranked lists conceal this completely, because they count strings of letters. Counted as a sound, the family dominated a decade in a way no single name has since the nineteenth century. The same effect applies to the -ayla family for girls, the -lyn family, and the -ee family before them.
