The story of Inna
The Orthodox calendar preserves names from peoples who left no other written trace, and Inna, Pinna and Rimma are the clearest example: three men martyred on the northern shore of the Black Sea, remembered together, with names that belong to no surviving language. Russian took all three into use for women, apparently on the strength of their endings, which look feminine in Slavic. Inna became a genuinely common Russian and Ukrainian woman's name in the twentieth century. It reached United States records with Russian and Jewish migration, with a best year of 1931, and it has risen again with post-Soviet arrivals.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name's origin is not recovered. It is Scythian or Gothic in transmission, coming into the Orthodox calendar with three martyrs of the first or second century; proposals connecting it to a word for strong stream or to Latin have no support. Its transfer to women in Russian usage is a matter of record, and it is not related to Anna or to Ines despite the resemblance.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
