Indra was the chief god of the Rigveda, with more hymns addressed to him than to anyone else, and he lost the position almost entirely. Later Hinduism demoted him to a king of the lesser gods who is regularly outwitted. Very few supreme deities have been dethroned in their own tradition.

The story of Indra
About a quarter of the hymns of the Rigveda are addressed to Indra, more than to any other god. He is a warrior, a drinker of soma, and above all the one who kills Vritra, the serpent holding back the waters, and releases the rivers, which is the central cosmogonic act of the collection. In the later tradition he shrinks steadily. The Puranas make him the ruler of Svarga, a heaven of pleasures, and give him a series of humiliations: he is outwitted by Krishna over the lifting of Govardhan hill, cursed, defeated by demons, and repeatedly saved by others. Buddhism absorbed him as Sakra, a devout but limited being. The demotion is unusually complete and is generally explained by the rise of Vishnu and Shiva, but the earlier stature is still readable in the hymns.

The Filippa test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Indra's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Filippa climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Filippa's path sketches the road Indra is walking now.
Indra sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
