The story of Hughie
The Capetian dynasty begins with Hugh Capet's election in 987 and, counting the Valois and Bourbon branches, held the French throne until 1792 and again from 1814 to 1848; the Spanish Bourbons are the same family and still reign. That is more than a thousand years of continuous male-line descent, which nothing else in Europe matches. The name Capet was a nickname, generally explained from the cape he wore as lay abbot of Saint-Martin de Tours, and it was not used as a family name until much later, most famously by the revolutionaries who tried Louis XVI as Citizen Louis Capet in 1792. The first name is Germanic and means, at bottom, mind. Its French form Hugues and Italian Ugo are the same name, and the Norman Conquest made it one of the commonest names in medieval England.
Meaning
Germanic hug, heart or mind
Hughie is a diminutive of Hugh, from Germanic hug, meaning heart, mind or spirit, a common first element in Frankish names such as Hubert and Hugbert. The Normans brought it to England, where it was very common in the middle ages. The peak of the diminutive is 1888.
