The story of Hipolito
Hippolytus was the son of Theseus, devoted to Artemis and contemptuous of Aphrodite, who arranged for his stepmother Phaedra to fall in love with him. He refused her; she killed herself leaving a note accusing him; Theseus cursed him, and Poseidon sent a bull from the sea that terrified his horses, which bolted and dragged him to death along the shore. Euripides wrote two plays about it and the surviving one is among the greatest Greek tragedies. The name means loosed horses, so it either describes the manner of his death in advance or was invented for the story, which is how such names usually work: Oedipus is swollen-foot because of what was done to him as an infant, and Pentheus, whose name suggests grief, is torn apart. Greek narrative rarely leaves a name idle.
