Where it comes from

The story of Heydi

Johanna Spyri published Heidi in 1881, and it became one of the most translated children's books ever written; the name went with it into every language the book reached. In Spanish-speaking countries the spelling had to change, because Spanish does not use ei for this sound and does use ey, as in rey and ley. Heydi and Heidy are the results, and they are strongest in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico, where the book was widely read in translation. Heydi's best year in United States records is 2008, and it belongs almost entirely to Central American families.

Meaning

noble kind, of noble sort

Heidi is a Swiss German short form of Adelheid, combining the Germanic elements adal, noble, and heid, kind or sort, and it is the same name as Adelaide and Alice. The clip takes the second element rather than the first, which is unusual; most short forms keep the front of the word. The ey spelling is a Spanish orthographic adaptation and carries no meaning.

Heydi sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 43 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Heydi went to 17 girls in 2025, but Heidi and Heidy are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,012, which makes it the 311th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,235 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,588 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Heydi itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Germanic meaning and one of the best-known children's books behind it.
  • The spelling reads correctly to Spanish speakers, which Heidi does not.
  • Five letters and no silent ones in Spanish terms.
What to consider
  • Heidi is the international standard and will be written instead.
  • Heidy, Heydi and Heidi all circulate in Central American records.
  • In English the first syllable spells an interjection.
