The story of Haily
Hailey crossed into American girls' naming in the 1980s and became one of the most-given names of the following two decades, and it generated more spellings than almost any other name in the record: Hailey, Haley, Haylee, Hayley, Haleigh, Hailee, Haylie, Hayleigh, Halie, Haily. Each addition is a letter more than the last, because a respelling has to be visibly different to do its job, and adding is easier than removing. Haily goes the other way, cutting the e out of Haley, and it is one of the least-used of the group as a result; its best year in United States records is 2003.
Meaning
hay clearing, hay meadow
From Old English heg, hay, and leah, a woodland clearing, giving the clearing where hay was cut. Hailey in Oxfordshire and other English places carry the name, and the surname follows them. The many modern spellings do not affect the etymology; they only redistribute the same six sounds across more letters.

The Donya test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Haily's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Donya climbed just as high around 1970, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Donya's path sketches the road Haily is walking now.
Haily sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
