Glendy
Feminine · “Welsh glan and da”
A large part of the modern Welsh name stock was manufactured on purpose. Nineteenth and twentieth-century revivalists built names out of ordinary Welsh words: Eirlys is a snowdrop, Heulwen is sunshine, Gwawr is dawn, Seren is a star. Glenda belongs to that workshop.

The story of Glendy
The Welsh cultural revival of the nineteenth century needed names, and the eisteddfod movement and the chapels supplied them by taking words out of the dictionary. Eirlys, a snowdrop. Heulwen, sunshine. Gwawr, dawn. Seren, a star. Rhian, a maiden. Meinir, slender and fair. Alongside these, older names were pulled out of the Mabinogi and the poets and put back into use: Rhiannon, Branwen, Olwen, Dylan, Gareth. And a third group was assembled from elements, giving Glenda, Glenys, Gwenda and Ceridwen in forms nobody used before 1850. The result is a name stock that feels ancient and is substantially modern, which is not a criticism: the same is true of Israeli Hebrew naming and of the Irish revival. A language reclaiming itself makes names as it goes.

Welsh glan and da, clean and good
Glendy is built on Glenda, a twentieth-century Welsh formation generally explained from glan, clean or pure, and da, good. Some sources instead treat it as a feminine of Glen, from Gaelic gleann, a valley. Neither is documented before the modern period, and the name has no medieval history. The peak is 1998.

The Falesha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Glendy's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Falesha climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Falesha's path sketches the road Glendy is walking now.
Glendy sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Glen works as a short form and is a name in its own right.
- Two syllables and six letters, easy to say.
- Glenda is available as the fuller form.
- Glenda is far commoner and reads as the formal version.
- The Welsh derivation is proposed rather than documented.
- The 1998 peak dates it to a narrow window.
