In Frankish Gaul only the Franks were fully free, so francus came to mean free, and from freedom came the sense of speaking freely, which English borrowed as frank. The same root gives franchise, a freedom or privilege, and franking a letter, which was originally the free postage of a member of parliament. So the name, the country, the adjective and the commercial term all descend from a Germanic people who crossed the Rhine in the third century. Francis of Assisi's own name gave a religious order, and through the order a very large share of the place names of the Americas, including San Francisco. The s spelling in Fransisco reflects seseo, the merger of c before e or i with s, which is universal in Latin American Spanish and makes the standard spelling unpredictable from the sound.
