Drexel is a surname carried by a Philadelphia banking family, and it entered American given-name use for reasons that are entirely about what that family did with its money — a university, a hospital, a museum, and a religious order founded by a daughter who gave away a fortune and was canonized in 2000.

The story of Drexel
Francis Martin Drexel emigrated from Austria in 1817 and founded a banking house that became one of the largest in America. His son endowed Drexel University in 1891. His granddaughter Katharine Drexel used her inheritance to found schools for Black and Native American children across the United States and established a religious order to run them; she was canonized in 2000. That is an unusual amount of visible public good attached to one surname, and it is why Drexel appears in the given-name records at all, peaking in 1914.

From a German surname, probably from a word for a turner or a lathe
Drexel is a South German and Austrian surname generally connected to drechseln, to turn on a lathe, so an occupational name for a turner of wood. A derivation from a place name has also been proposed. The etymology is plausible rather than proven, and the American name's history is entirely about the family, not the word.
