Where it comes from

The story of Finian

Finnian of Clonard ran a monastic school in the sixth century that trained the men later called the Twelve Apostles of Ireland, Columba among them. The story of the psalter comes from a much later life of Columba and may not be historical, but it is the earliest statement of the principle in Europe: Columba borrowed a book, copied it secretly, and Finnian demanded the copy on the grounds that it derived from his property. The high king Diarmait mac Cerbaill heard the case and found for Finnian with the formula about the calf. Tradition adds that the dispute led to a battle in which three thousand died and to Columba's departure for Iona as penance. Whether or not any of it happened, the judgment is the first known ruling that the right to copy belongs with the original.

About 1 boy in 13,556 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 244,011 for Finian itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
