Where it comes from

The story of Felix

Roman geographers divided Arabia into three. Arabia Petraea was the north-west, named for its capital Petra. Arabia Deserta was the interior. Arabia Felix was the south, roughly modern Yemen, and it was called fortunate because it was fertile: monsoon rain fell there, terraced agriculture was possible, and it controlled the frankincense and myrrh trade that supplied the temples of the whole Mediterranean. Aelius Gallus led a Roman expedition against it in about 26 BC on Augustus's orders, lost most of his army to disease and bad guides, and achieved nothing. The name kept its Latin sense of fruitful rather than lucky, which is a useful reminder that the adjective in the name Felix meant something more agricultural than it now sounds.

Meaning

Latin felix, fruitful or fortunate

Felix is a Latin adjective meaning originally fruitful and later fortunate or happy, used as a personal name from the Republic onward and borne by dozens of saints and four popes. It is one of very few Latin names in continuous use for more than two thousand years. The female entries in the American record are few and mostly represent family names. The female peak is 1928.
