Favio
Masculine · “Latin faba”
Rome's greatest families were named after vegetables. Fabius is the broad bean, Lentulus the lentil, Cicero the chickpea, Piso the pea. These were the names of consuls and generals, borne for centuries without a hint of embarrassment, and the historians who recorded them thought the derivations obvious.

The story of Favio
The Fabii were among the oldest patrician families in Rome, and the most famous of them, Quintus Fabius Maximus, earned the additional name Cunctator, the delayer, for refusing to fight Hannibal in open battle and wearing him down instead. That strategy is still called Fabian, and the Fabian Society took its name from it in 1884 to signal gradual rather than revolutionary socialism. So a family named after a bean gave English a word for political patience. The b and v of the Spanish spelling are worth a note of their own: Spanish lost the distinction between the two sounds by the medieval period, and both letters now represent the same consonant, which is why Spanish spelling errors so often involve them and why Favio and Fabio are the same name written two ways.

Latin faba, the broad bean
The Roman family name Fabius is traditionally derived from faba, the broad bean, one of a group of Roman gentilicial names taken from crops. Roman antiquarians themselves gave this explanation, though as with many of their etymologies it may be a guess. Favio is a Spanish spelling of Fabio, the Italian and Spanish form; Spanish merged b and v centuries ago, so the two spellings are identical in sound and freely exchanged.

The Sipriano test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Favio's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Sipriano climbed just as high around 1923, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Sipriano's path sketches the road Favio is walking now.
Favio sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
