The story of Evaristo
The eu- prefix is one of the most productive elements in Greek and it survives in English scientific vocabulary as well as in names: eulogy, euphony, euphemism, euthanasia, eukaryote, euphoria. Each is transparent to anyone who knows the prefix means good and can identify the second half. The naming family is equally systematic, and it is worth noticing that most of the eu- names entered Christian use through martyrs and bishops of the first four centuries rather than through classical Greek literature. That is because early Christians in the Greek-speaking east chose names that made a statement, and eu- names make one cheaply: attach the prefix to any positive noun and you have a name that means good at that. Evaristo peaks in the United States in 1971, arriving with Spanish-speaking and Italian families rather than Greek ones.
Meaning
Greek euarestos, well-pleasing
From Greek eu, well or good, and arestos, pleasing, from the verb areskein, to please. Euarestos, well-pleasing, is the source of the Latin Evaristus and the Spanish and Italian Evaristo. Pope Evaristus, traditionally the fifth bishop of Rome, carried the name into the Christian calendar. The v of the modern forms reflects the medieval Greek pronunciation of the digraph eu before a vowel, which shifted from ew to ev.

Evaristo's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Benedetto climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Benedetto's path sketches the road Evaristo is walking now.
