Benedetto
Masculine · “well spoken of”
Benedictus is a passive participle: it does not mean blessed in the sense of possessing a quality, it means having been well spoken of, by somebody else. The name records what other people say about a man, not what he is, and that grammatical distinction survives intact from the Latin.

The story of Benedetto
Benedict of Nursia founded Western monasticism in the sixth century, and his Rule shaped European religious life for a thousand years; sixteen popes have taken the name. Italian gave it as Benedetto, with the Latin -ct- assimilating to -tt- as it regularly does in Italian, the same change that turns octo into otto and noctem into notte. Benedetto traveled to the United States with the Italian migration and appears in American records in the first quarter of the twentieth century, with its best year in 1913, after which American-born sons were increasingly registered as Benedict or Benny.
Meaning
well spoken of, blessed
Latin benedictus, from bene, well, and dicere, to say. The literal sense is spoken well of, and the religious sense of blessed follows from the idea of a blessing being words said over someone. The same construction gives English benediction and the Italian noun benedizione. Malediction is its exact opposite and is built identically.
