The story of Ethen
Ethan appears a handful of times in the Hebrew Bible and was taken up by English Puritans, which is how it reached colonial America; Ethan Allen led the Green Mountain Boys at Ticonderoga in 1775 and is its best-known early American bearer. The name was quiet for two centuries and then rose extraordinarily fast from the 1990s, reaching the American top five. That climb produced respellings, and Ethen, Ethyn and Eathan all appear behind it. Ethen peaks in 2004, inside the parent name's own high period.
Meaning
Firm, enduring, perennial
From Hebrew ʾêṯān, firm, strong or enduring — used of a stream that flows all year and of things that last. The reading is settled. Ethan the Ezrahite is named in First Kings as one of the wise men Solomon surpassed, and Psalm 89 is attributed to him. The -en spelling is an American variant; the final vowel is reduced in both.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ethen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Armin climbed just as high around 1914, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Armin's path sketches the road Ethen is walking now.
Ethen sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
