The story of Armin
Arminius led the Cherusci to victory in the Teutoburg Forest, annihilating three legions; Augustus is said to have beaten his head against a wall over it, and the Roman frontier never moved past the Rhine. German nationalism revived him as Hermann in the nineteenth century, and Armin is the modern given name. It is in current American use.

Not established
Arminius is a Latin rendering of an unrecorded Germanic name, and what it was is not recovered. Proposals connect it to the Germanic ermen, 'whole' or 'universal', or to a Latin formation. A separate Persian Armin, from the Shahnameh, is unrelated. Neither line is settled.

The trade-off
- The man who stopped Rome at the Rhine carries the Latin form.
- It is used in German, Persian and Hungarian, which is an unusual spread.
- Two clean syllables with no pronunciation risk.
- The original Germanic name is genuinely unrecovered.
- The German and Persian names are separate and only coincidentally alike.
- German nationalist use of the figure is a real association.
